We run a 40-person fabrication unit near Peenya. Everyone says we need to digitise, but vendors only pitch software. Where should a business like ours actually start?

Start with the process, not the software. Pick the one workflow that costs you the most time or money, often job tracking, material planning or invoicing, and map how it works today, step by step. Measure it: how long does a job take from order to dispatch, and where does it wait? Only then choose tools that remove those waits. Digitisation is about better processes and better decisions; software is just the means.

Seconding this. We started with just digital job cards on tablets on the shop floor. It sounds small, but knowing where every job was in real time changed how we planned the whole week.
